question of the day #3 - 04-01-02

what was the first car you ever owned and do you remember listening to a specific song in that car and if so, what was it?

'76 or '77 rabbit. total piece of shit. bought it off a guy i knew named "roach". roach was one of the high school kids that hung around the punk band i lived with at the time. roach, already at that point in his life, looked like a bad-guy extra in some cheap california cop movie. one of those guys that doesn't have any lines, he just jumps out of the jeep rocking his AK and gets his ass shot off first thing. or maybe you see him when the main heavy gives him instructions to go kidnap the girl or something. he had this kind of hunky surfer vibe going on along with the sleaze.

so we used to buy these kids booze and they'd hook us up with pot and acid. it was fun for a while. it didn't take too long to figure out they were pretty much just getting all their rebellion out early, though. roach got way into weightlifting a couple years later and even wound up joining the marines or some shit, which was totally fucked up. none of them got into any serious trouble except this one korean kid who spent time in the federal pen in minnesota for receiving a couple hundred hits of acid in the mail. i don't specifically recall talking to that guy, but i do remember being driven in his vw bug to buy him beer once and noticing (this was summer) that he was driving barefoot.

usually we drank 40s of old milwaukee for $.99 each or quarts of old style for $1.05. sometimes we'd splurge and get the mickey's 40s for $1.30.

anyways, 400 dollars for that rabbit. and i remember once, maybe i hadn't bought it yet and was just borrowing it, driving to pick roach up from the bus station listening to wire's "pink flag". there were several other tapes i might have listened to in that car, but i don't recall any in particular.
